The Late George Macklem

The death of Mr. George Macklem, of Vanessa, in the Township of Windham, occurred at his residence on Wednesday, May 25th.

Mr. Macklem was one of the oldest residents of the Township. He had been in his usual good health until a little over a week before his death.

He was born in the Township of Whitechurch, York County, in the year 1824. When two years of age he went with his parents to Wentworth County, and at the age of twenty-five came to Norfolk County.

In 1854 Mr. and Mrs. Macklem settled upon the farm where they resided until the time of his death.

In his younger days he was much interested in the welfare of his country. He was a regular attendant and supporter of the Methodist church, although a staunch believer in the Presbyterian religion.

Mr. Macklem was of a genial and hospitable nature, which won for him many friends in the neighborhood in which he was so long a resident.

He leaves to mourn their loss a widow two sons and four daughters. The funeral took place on Friday afternoon and was an unusually large gathering of friends and neighbors from the vicinity and surrounding townships. The services were conducted by Rev. Mr. Russ, after which the interment took place in the Vanessa cemetery.
