Mrs. Crockett dies suddenly

Last Grandchild of Settler
Passed Away in Charlotteville

Port Rowan, June 1. -- Mrs. Elizabeth Crockett died quite suddenly at her home in this village last Monday, after attaining the ripe old age of 84 years.

At the time when the call came she was alone in her house, and making her way to the veranda. Her cry for help very soon brought the assistance of neighbors and a son, but notwithstanding their efforts to revive her, she passed away in a few minutes after being carried to her room.

Mrs. Crockett's maiden name was Elizabeth Mabee. She was born on the old Mabee homestead on the front road in Charlotteville.

She was the last of a family of ten children, five sons and five daughters of the late Pilham and Mrs. Mabee, and was the only grandchild left of the pioneer, Frederick Mabee, who was the first white man buried in Norfolk County.

She married James Crockett, and they settled in Normandale. After ten years they moved to this village, where she had since lived.

Since the death of her husband six years ago, she has lived with and kept house for two of her sons. There are four sons and one daughter, who live to mourn her loss -- Jos., Caruso and Harry of Port Rowan; Samuel of Buffalo; and Jennie, Mrs. J. R. Sherk, of Simcoe. She is survived also by eighteen great-grandchildren and twenty-two grandchildren.

The deceased was for a great many years a faithful member of the Baptist church, and she will be greatly missed by a large number of friends and especially by her children, who have the sympathy of the whole village in their loss.

The funeral was held from the house on Wednesday, and was conducted by the Rev. Mr. Rowland. Interment took place in the family plot in Bay View Cemetery.
