Port Rowan:
One of Norfolk County's oldest residents, William H. Leighfield
died
Saturday at his home in Port Rowan, following several weeks' illness,
in
his 97th year.
Mr. Leighfield, who spent the
greater part of his life at Port Royal, was the eldest
son of the late
William Leighfield and Elizabeth Wark.
A drover until he retired some
years ago, he was long active in municipal affairs,
serving as
councillor and reeve of South Walsingham for a total of 13 years.
He
was also an active member of the Liberal Association and a judge of
cattle,
sheep and swine at district fairs, acting in that capacity at
Charlotteville's Fair,
Walsh, even in recent years.
He was twice married, his
first wife having been the former Lily Abbott.
He later married Mrs.
Martha Gates, who survives. They moved to
Port Rowan about five years
ago.
Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Clayton Bouck of Port
Royal,
one brother Alex Leighfield of Langton,
one sister, Mrs. C. D.
Foster of Port Rowan,
two stepsons, Elmer Gates of Hamilton and Ivan
Gates of Buffalo,
and two stepdaughters, Mrs. George Biddle of Delhi
and
Mrs. Arnold McDonald of Simcoe.
A son, Chalmers Leighfield of Port
Royal, died several years ago.
Service is from Neal Memorial
United Church on Monday at 2.30 p.m.
with Rev. J. W. Peach
officiating, assisted by Rev. A. J. Elson,
and interment in Port Royal
cemetery.
