A complete transcription of an extended death notice from the 9 Dec 1886 issue of Waterford Star newspaper DIED Kitchen -- On the 26th ult., at her own residence, Townsend, of asthma, Elizabeth Kitchen, widow of the late Deacon Henry Kitchen, aged 77 years. The deceased was a daughter of John and Mary Barber, a family amongst the early settlers of this township, of which she was always a resident. When 16 years of age she was married to Mr. Kitchen, who died 25 years ago, and her married life stretched over a period of 34 years, and she became the mother of 11 children, six sons and five daughters. One died in infancy, and a son Mr. Moses Kitchen in the summer of 1885. About the time of her marriage she became settled in religious life and united with the "Second Townsend," now known as the Bloomsburg Baptist Church, and in which her membership was continued until her death. Through infirmity she was deprived in recent years of attending public worship, though an earnest Christian woman. Her attachments were strong to the family and by frugality and industry secured to them, with her late husband, a good competency, while she left behind a fragrant and pious influence. Much time was spent by her amongst good books but the Bible was her cherished treasure. Recently there loomed up a green spot in her life by a visit from a son greatly endeared to her, Rev. A. E. Kitchen, b.a., of Live Oak, Florida. The funeral was largely attended by relatives and others on the Sabbath following her death, and appropriate services were conducted by her pastor in the Bloomsburg Baptist Church, when the remains were accompanied by many to Greenwood Cemetery, Townsend, and laid in the family burying plot. Another mature saint has fallen asleep in Jesus. |
