Lawrence
R. Johnson, aged 84 years 3 months and 28 days, died in Glenada,
Ore., on Saturday, 2 Jan 1915, after an illness of considerable
duration.
Mr. Johnson was a brother of
Christopher Johnson, Sr., Windham; Samuel and Albert, both of Alberta,
Richard of Forestville; who live in this vicinity are W. C.,
[stead] in Charlotteville, and Edward, of Kansas.
Sisters of the deceased are:
Mrs. Caldwell (Margaret), of St. Williams, Mrs. Wm. Price (Lauretta),
of Charlotteville; and Mrs. De Wett [sic] (Eliza), of New
Mexico.
Cousins who live in this
vicinity are W. C. Beaupre, Richard Johnson, Mrs. Alm[onte] McCall and
Mrs. Benjamin Chadwick of Simcoe; Manson Hart and Jeremiah Johnson of
Woodhouse.
The deceased was a son of Richard
Johnson and Eliza Curran [sic], well and favorably known in
pioneer days in Charlotteville, where he was born on 4 Sep
1831, and learned the carpenter trade, which he followed till the
weight of years came upon him so that he could no longer work.
He built the station houses at
Vittoria, Walsh and St. Williams.
In 1859, Mr. Johnson was
married to Miss Emma Beaupre, with whom he traveled life's pathway for
forty-eight years. To the couple were born five sons and one daughter,
of whom three sons are now living.
After their marriage Mr. and
Mrs. Johnson lived consecutively in Minnesota, Iowa and Kansas, and
finally settled in Oregon in 1891.
Mr. Johnson is spoken of by
all who knew him as being a hard-working man, of good habits and a
high standard of honor. He joined the Baptist church when he was a
boy, and remained a consistent Christian all his life.
The funeral was held on
Monday, January 4th, interment being made in the Oddfellows' cemetery
at Glenada, beside the grave of his wife, who died seven years ago.
Mr. Johnson leaves three sons,
besides several grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. The sons
are: Lucien E. Johnson, of Glenada; L. G. Johnson, of Seattle, Wash.;
and Roy Johnson, of Gray's Harbor.
