Boston
It
again becomes our painful duty to record the death of one of our most
prominent citizens in the person of Deacon Joseph Johnson, son of the
late Joseph Johnson and Hannah Johnson.
The
deceased had been sick for several years with consumption and as the
hour of departure drew nigh he longed to be with Christ. The end came
peacefully at 8 o'clock on Saturday night last. His affliction was borne
without a murmur.
Deceased
was born in this place on the 28th of December, 1846. On March 31st,
1868, he was married to Lizzie B. Mabee of Lobo, who still survives him.
In her he found a true helpmate in his journey through life. There were
born to them four children, all of whom are living.
Our
brother has always taken an active part in anything pertaining to the
welfare of the country and was a strong supporter of the Reform party.
At
the age of 20 deceased was led to see the need of a Savior and on Jan.
21, 1866, he was baptised by Rev. George Wilson and united with the
Baptist church in this place.
Several
years ago he was elected a Deacon of the church, an office he ably
filled, although he was not able to attend the services of late.
His
influence for good has been strongly felt and as a neighbor he was
highly respected by all and there are not a few who have reason to
remember his kind deeds.
As
a husband and father he was kind and affectionate.
The
funeral took place on Tuesday at 10 o'clock from his late residence to
the Boston cemetery, after which a very impressive sermon was preached
by Rev. S. G. Harris, assisted by Rev. W. H. Haviland.
Several
beautiful designs of flowers were placed on the casket, among them
being, a wreath by the family, a boquet [sic] of wheat from Mr.
and Mrs. James Swartz, a boquet [sic] of roses and lilies from
Henry Johnson.
He leaves
behind to morn their loss one brother, Henry of Brantford, a wife and
four children, all of whom have the deepest sympathy of the community.
The
pallbearers were: Thos. H. Johnstone, James Ross, James Oxley, Wm.
McCellan, Wilfred Anderson and S. B. Nelles.
