Diamond Wedding

A very pleasant event took place at their residence, Hillview Farm, Rockford, on Sunday, August 29, when a happy company united with Mr. and Mrs. George Irwin sr., in celebrating the 60th anniversary of their marriage.

The home was prettily decorated with flowers.

The aged couple were in exceptional health, and were pleased to have the following children and grandchildren present: Alwy and Miss Ida, who reside in the home, and with every kindness care for their parents; Mr. and Mrs. Ansley Irwin of Simcoe;
Mr. and Mrs. Robt. McCarter and daughters Edith and Luella,
and Mr. and Mrs. Geo. A. Irwin of Jarvis.

There were also Mr. and Mrs. F. D. Kitchen of Renton; Mrs. Deming of Simcoe, sister of Mrs. Irwin and Mrs. Wm. Irwin of Rockford.

Letters of congratulations and regret were received from their eldest son John, wife and family, including Blanche, Wyatt and Stanley, residing at home; Mr. and Mrs. Alfred Wylie and children of Saskatoon; Mr. and Mrs. Low Wylie of Yorkton, Sask., also Dr. and Mrs. Coleman and son of Kindersley, Sask.; besides four sons and two daughters mentioned above there are 8 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

After a most sumptuous dinner, congratulatory addresses were made by a number of the family and relatives. In reply, Mr. Irwin very feelingly spoke of a kind Providence Who had dealt so mercifully with them all through their many years of married life.

With the exception of a little daughter who died in infancy, they were an unbroken family; and [he] urged them all to so live that they might make an un unbroken family above.

Mr. and Mrs. Irwin are pioneer settlers in Townsend, having reached the ages of 89 and 87. Mr. Irwin was born in the County of Fermanagh, Ireland, and came to Canada with his parents at the age of 15. Mrs. Irwin, whose maiden name was Sarah Kitchen, was born near Bloomsburg, and has a wide circle of relatives and friends in Norfolk County.

They have resided at Rockford all the years of their married life, and have won the highest esteem of the entire community. Notwithstanding their physical weakness, both have retained their mental faculties.

Owing to the sacredness of the day, it was impossible to hold a formal reception; nevertheless a number of friends and relatives came to offer their congratulations and best wishes to the aged couple.

When it came time to say good-bye, all felt that a very pleasant and profitable day had been spent -- one that will always live in the memory of those present. -- Corr.
