On
Saturday morning, December 28th, there passed peacefully away another
of the few remaining pioneers of Townsend, in the person of William T.
Honey at the age of 77 years.
Mr.
Honey was born at Bowmanville in the year 1852 and at an early age
came with his parents the late Mr. and Mrs. Henry Honey to reside near
Rockford.
In the year
1880 he was united in marriage to Miss R. J.
Erwin, daughter of the
late David Erwin of Villa Nova.
After
their marriage he resumed the responsibility of making for himself a
home. This responsibility he shouldered and carried to a successful
issue in the face of difficulties of which we in the present
generation have but little knowledge. Where now stands imposing
buildings and broad acres of tillable soil he commenced his labours
with what few accessories those early times afforded but with
undaunted courage, unspeakable honor and a hardy constitution he
finally became one of Norfolk's outstanding farmers.
Mr.
and Mrs. Honey retired to Waterford 13 years ago where he spent the
remaining years of his life.
The
funeral service was held, from his late residencee on Monday,
Dec. 30th and was very largely attended by relatives and friends.
Rev.
J. Wright of Brantford, an old friend and neighbour, conducted the
service, assisted by Mr. Glen Wilkins, Rev. T. Frears and Rev. E. J.
Whan of Villa Nova.
The
Eulogy paid him by Rev. Wright was most touching. In simple language
he described his departed friend as a man whose soul was so secure
that he would unhesitatingly risk his own for the glorious place it
now occupies in Heaven.
Without
undue flattery he depicted the simple quiet life, the zeal, the
courage, the sower of good deeds, the fidelity to church and family
and friends, until one felt that here indeed is a man who has filled
his allotted place in life and who steps out of it to a glorious
reward.
During the
service a favorite hymn of the deceased was sung,
"Rock of Ages."
There
remains to mourn their loss his wife and son Wilton E. Honey of Villa
Nova, also one brother J. Honey of Waterford.
The
pall bearers were Ellis Honey, Will Hall, John Erwin, John
Birdsell,
L. L. Angeleri and W. H. Taylor, M.P.
Interment
took place in Greenwood Cemetery.
