Boston
This
week we are mourning the death of one of our most prominent citizens
in the person of Deacon Ira Haviland, eldest son of the late John
Haviland, which sad event took place on Sunday evening at 10.30 with
typhoid fever.
He was born in this place
and always lived here. At the age of 21 years he was married to Emeline,
eldest daughter of the late David Secord of Oakland, who still survives
him. In her he found a true helpmate in all the struggles through life.
There were born to them
seven children, all of whom are living, except one daughter, who died a
few years ago.
Deceased
has always taken an active part in the interest of his country, being a
strong supporter of the Liberal party.
At
the age of 25 he was led to see the need for a Saviour and united with
the Baptist Church in this place, being baptised by Rev. B. W. Rogers.
During
his many years of membership he was called on to serve in a number of
responsible offices. He was also deacon for a number of years.
He
studied the scripture from his youth up and gave a full proof of his
entire trust in the divine promise, his hope at the end being bright for
the eternal world.
As a
neighbor he was universally respected, being known for his honesty and
uprightness in all his business transactions and punctual in his
engagements.
His funeral
took place on Tuesday afternoon at 2 o'clock, from his late residence to
the family burying ground and was largely attended. [Service
details omitted.]
Deceased
became a member of Court Boston C.O.F., some 18 years ago. The members
of the Court attended the funeral in a body.
[Flowers
were from: the Foresters, Mr. and Mrs. Secord of Brantford, Messrs.
Thomas of Mt. Pleasant, and
Mr. and Mrs. S. G. Harris.]
The
pallbearers were: Thomas H. Johnston, John Taylor, Geo. Taylor, Alex.
Birdsell, Emerett Cunningham and David H. Lutes.
