MAY BE MURDER

Squire Haley and Son in Jail on a Serious Charge

Squire Haley and his son Samuel, who allegedly assaulted Mr. Jeffrey, on Monday near Tilsonburg, were arrested that night and given a preliminary trial before Squire Cohoe. They were remanded to jail at Simcoe, the assault having taken place in the county of Norfolk.

It is alleged that old man Haley did not strike Jeffrey, but told his son to kill him. Mr. Jeffrey's jaw bone was broken and several of his ribs, the fractured bone protruding through the lungs and flesh. The injured man is in a precarious condition and will probably die.  His wounds are said to be ghastly in appearance and may prove fatal.  When Haley knocked Jeffrey down it is said he sprung upon him like a wild beast and kicked and pounded him until his body was a mass of broken flesh and bones.

Dr. Sinclair is in attendance but has very slight hopes of Jeffrey's recovery.  Jeffrey is a man about 53 years of age.  The Haley's reside on what is known as the Fletcher side road, about two miles south east of Tilsonburg.

[Transcriber's Comment: Haley was subsequently fined $500 -- not a small sum back then. Haley and Jeffrey were neighbors. Their descendants married.]
