Death of Peter Smith Griffin

On Wednesday, April 21, Mr. Peter Smith Griffin passed away at the residence of his son-in-law, Wm. H. Ward, in the Township of Windham.

Mr. Griffin was one of the oldest residents of the county, having been born on the 13th of August 1824, within a mile of the house where he died. In fact with the exception of about a year that he lived in St. Paul, Minn., and one winter spent in the town of Simcoe, he lived all of his long life in the immediate vicinity of his birthplace.

He was the only son and sole survivor of the large family of Richard Griffin and Hannah Mills.

His wife was Ellen Leask, a sister of the late
Capt. Abram Leask of Windham. She predeceased him about 20 years ago.

There were seven children, all living:
Sandfield of Batavia, N.Y.;
Mrs. Ida M. Reid of Buffalo;
Mrs. Luella Patullo of Vancouver, B.C.;
Mrs. Mary O. Pullen of Charlotteville;
Mrs. Florence R. Ward of Windham;
Russell E. of Simcoe; and
Horace of Los Angeles, Cal.

The deceased was a lifelong Liberal in politics and an adherent of the Methodist Church. Before he became incapacitated for work, Mr. Griffin was an exceedingly active man and was in fact always at work, which seemed to be a pleasure to him, and almost apparently, necessary to his existence.

Until the last few years he always assisted in the lighter work around the farm. While all his own generation have passed away, yet he will be missed by many friends.
