On Thursday
last, January 25th, the death occurred at her home on Colborne Street,
of an old and well known resident of this town in the person of Maria
Gibbon, widow of James Allgeo.
For a short time Mrs. Allgeo had been ill with pneumonia, but was
thought to be on the road to recovery. On the morning of her death she
was propped up in her bed for breakfast, when her heart suddenly gave
out.
She had lived in Simcoe all her life, dying in her 69th year. She
was the daughter of Wm. Gibbon, a soap manufacturer, who did business
here about 50 years ago.
Mrs. Allgeo survived her husband only about three years. Her only
son, Fred, died about 15 years ago. The funeral took place the
following Saturday afternoon to Oakwood Cemetery.
With the death of Mrs. Allgeo the municipality of Simcoe receives a
most generous gift from the estate of her late husband. Mr. James
Allgeo left an estate of $12,000, to be distributed upon the death of
his wife.
With the exception of a few small legacies the estate becomes the
property of the town of Simcoe for the purpose of building or
assisting in the erection of a public hospital.
Mr. H. P. Innes, K.C., and Mr. H. S. Macpherson are named as
executors of the will and after the winding up of the affairs of the
estate they will be able to turn over approximately $12,000 to the
corporation. This substantial bequest will aid in filling a long felt
need.
