The Late Mrs.
Garland
Mrs. Mary Garland, widow of John
Garland Sr., died at the home of her son-in-law, John Carvill, 292
Colborne street north, on Sunday, in her 89th year.
Mrs. Garland has been laid up
since the day before Christmas, when she fell while crossing the floor at
the Carvill home. Whether or not the fall was caused by a slight stroke is
not definitely known, but the shock of the mishap proved too much for the
enfeebled lady in her advancing years.
Mrs. Garland's maiden name was
Mary Hurt. She was born in Nottinghamshire, England, and on coming to
Canada first lived for a while in Dundas. Later she moved to Colborne and
then to the North Ward, Simcoe, where she has been a continuous resident
for over fifty years. Her husband died a great many years ago.
The deceased lady leaves to mourn
her loss two sons and three daughters. The sons are John and Harry, both
of Simcoe. The daughters are Mrs. John Carvill (Minnie) and Mrs. W. C.
Everett (Alma), of Simcoe; and Mrs. Charles Powell (Annie) of Windsor.
Frank Hurt of Sandwich, a brother, also survives.
The funeral took place from the
Carvill residence at 2:30 Wednesday afternoon to the Oakwood cemetery, the
services being conducted by Rev. Dr. Dey, of St. Paul's Presbyterian
church.
