Fire at
Delhi
About one o'clock Sunday morning the American hotel, Delhi, was discovered
to be on fire. The proprietor, Mr. J.
B. Walsh, accompanied by his wife, left the hotel about 9:30 p.m., and
drove out of town to visit friends. The building was locked up, and
on forcing an entrance it was found that the fire had started upstairs,
and had made such progress that it was impossible to save the building or
its contents. The fire brigade did good service in saving the
surrounding buildings. H.
A. Bell's grocery and dwelling, about fifteen feet from the hotel,
caught fire several times, also the roofs of R.
J. Pedlow's tin shop, the Vindicator printing office, and
public library across the street. The hotel was built of white brick
and valued at $3,000. It was owned by D. Z. Gibson
of Brantford. Insurance on building $2,000; on contents $1,000. The origin of the fire is unknown.
