It
becomes our duty once more to chronicle the death of another old and
respected resident of Waterford in the person of Mr. James Erwin, who
died on Sunday morning, April 25th, in his 77th year.
He had not enjoyed
good health for about two years and gradually declined during the last
five months of his illness. He took dinner with the family on Friday and
from that time until Sunday morning he gradually grew weaker.
Mr. Erwin was born
in the County of York, near Toronto, and was the son of James Erwin and
Margaret Clark, the former of whom died Jun 13th, 1846, and the latter
Sept. 1st, 1881, both having emigrated from Ireland about the year 1811.
Mr. Erwin came to
Townsend Township in 1832 and took up farming, which occupation he
followed until he moved to Waterford some seven years ago. He was
considered one of the most successful farmers in the Township and was a
man of sterling qualities and highly respected by his large circle of
acquaintances.
Forty-eight years
ago last Saturday Mr. Erwin married Janet McAlpine, who survives him.
He also leaves two sons and two daughters, Charles, and Jennie at home,
and Wallace of Waterford, and Mrs. Hellyer of Townsend.
Mr. Erwin was the
last survivor of a family of five brothers and two sisters.
The funeral was
held on Tuesday afternoon and was largely attended by sympathizing
friends. The services were conducted by his pastor, Rev. E. Sheppard.
Those from a distance who were in attendance were James McAlpine of
London, brother of Mrs. Erwin, Charles Gray, Albert Gray, Robt.
Snodgrass and Mrs. Robt. Erwin of Hamilton.
