The Late Mrs. Derrickson

One of Simcoe's oldest and most respected citizens passed away a few days ago in the person of Mrs. Mary Derrickson. Born in England, she came to Canada in 1840, remained in and near Simcoe for 70 years.

For some time she lived at Brown's Corners, and was known through that neighborhood as a kind and helpful woman, whose value in a community is beyond price.

Her husband died in 1876, and for a while she stayed in various places, until she came to make her home with Mr. and Mrs. Charles Derrickson, [11] years ago. Here she spent a serene and happy old age, drawing gradually near to the end of life, until she literally "fell on sleep" on Wednesday, January 5th.

Since 1842, Mrs. Derrickson had been a member of the Simcoe Baptist Church, and her long years of membership bore a constant and unfailing record of disciplineship. She loved God's home, often walking five miles to attend the services. She loved God's Word, which she was able to read to the last.

Mrs. Derrickson is survived by a brother in Milford, Mich., and a sister in Goderich, Ont. She leaves also seven daughters, one son, 37 grandchildren and 38 great-grandchildren, in whose memory she will ever hold a honored place.

The funeral was held on Friday, Jan. 7 at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Derrickson, and many gathered there to show the last respects to their departed friend.

The services were conducted by Rev. P. K. Dayfoot and Rev. J. Liddy and the burial was performed in the Baptist cemetery at Walsh. "The memory of the just is blessed."

[Compiler's Comment: "Mary" appears to be the same woman identified as Harriet Wooten, wife of James Derrickson by the Simcoe Reformer, who died the same day in the same house, and is buried beside James Derrickson in Walsh Baptist Cemetery
