At the advanced age of 81
years another of the life long residents of Waterford, the late Adam
Bowlby Dean, passed away, Friday, 1 Jul 1921.
The deceased, who was the sixth
son of a family of eight sons and two daughters, was born on what is
known as "Buckwheat Street," Windham township, in the year
1839.
The late Mr. Dean learned the
trade of blacksmith and when only 10 years of age was shoeing horses.
With the exception of two years
in Michigan he spent all of his life in Waterford, building in time, 13
brick and three frame houses.
The deceased was a man of strong
physique and possessed wonderful powers of endurance, and worked
constantly at his trade up to about
1 Mar 1921. One day last February he fitted the shoes for 24
horses.
He was troubled with asthma for some time and was unable to sleep except
in a chair.
In the year 1858, the late Mr.
Dean was united in marriage to the late Jane Sovereign, and of this
union there were born four daughters and three sons, of whom two
daughters, Mrs. C. M. Jarvis of Burlington, and Kathryn at home, and two
sons, Alonzo of Ann Arbor, Mich., and Leonard of Waterford, survive.
He is also survived by one
sister, Mrs. Geo. Hicks of Simcoe, and one brother, Leonard, of
Coldwater, Mich. These and other sorrowing relatives have the sympathy
of the community.
The funeral took place Sunday, 3
Jul 1921. Services were conducted by Rev. H. Wilkins and interment took
place in Greenwood cemetery.
The pall bearers were three
grandsons, Edgar Dean, Morley Dean, Harold Dean; one son-in-law Mr. Geo.
R. Brown of Hamilton, and two grandsons-in-law, Mr. Jas. Turvey of
Brantford and Mr. Bert Sloat of Hartford.
