Warden of Norfolk County 48
years ago and a resident of Delhi for many years, Dent Dalton will
observe his 92nd birthday on Friday, February 13, at the home of his
daughter, Mrs. George Muir, 30 Oswald Crescent, Toronto, with whom
he has resided since 1938.
Born two and one-half miles
north of Delhi, Mr. Dalton is the last of four children of the late
Richard Dalton and Mary Ireland. He was educated at the Pine Woods
and Gothic Schools near Delhi, and farmed many years, both in
Norfolk County and in Saskatchewan and Alberta. In addition, he and
his son operated a factory in Delhi for 20 years, manufacturing
gloves, robes and coats, until the factory burned.
Extremely active in municipal
affairs, Mr. Dalton served as reeve of Delhi in 1900, 1902 and 1903,
and again in 1925 and 1926. He was warden of the county in 1900, for
two years chairman of the County Home Committee and two years
chairman of the Children's Shelter.
He is a member of the Church
of the Transfiguration, Toronto, and of the Independent Order of
Foresters. He also was Supreme Leader of the Order of Canadian Home
Circles, which is now amalgamated with the I.O.F.
At one time Mr. Dalton was a
widely-known breeder and exhibitor of road and carriage horses, and
he has in his possession some very fine gold medals won in 1895
[....], Montreal and Toronto.
In [1882] Mr. Dalton was
married [to] Hannah Hagerman of Windham [township], the
wedding taking [place] at St. Alban's Church in Delhi. Mrs. Dalton
passed away in 1938 and since that time he has made his home with
his daughter, Leta, Mrs. Muir. He also has one son, Richard A.
Dalton of Thursby, Alberta, and there are two grandchildren.
