The Municipal
World contains the following sketch of Mr. S. Cunningham of this
place, also a half-tone cut:
Mr. Cunningham was born in the Township of Townsend in 1837. He received
a common school education and taught school for two years, after which
he attended Grammar school in connection with Madison University, New
York, and finally graduated at the Woodstock College in 1863.
During the succeeding 19 years he was engaged as a minister of
the gospel and was compelled to retire on account of ill health.
His attention was then directed to the practice of dentistry,
which he followed until 1890, when he was appointed Clerk of the
Township of Townsend, and also of the Village of Waterford.
The same year he was appointed secretary-treasurer of the
Townsend Farmers' Mutual Fire Insurance Company and secretary of the
Waterford Cheese Factory.
In 1894 he was appointed treasurer of the Village Waterford. On
the formation of the Norfolk Clerk's Association in 1896 he was
elected president.
His is also a notary public, conveyancer, etc., and is a Liberal
in Politics. It is hardly necessary to say that the subject of this
sketch fills his several offices with satisfaction to all concerned.
