Port Rowan man Drowned

On Monday, Oct. 30th, news reached the village that James Crockett, mate of the schooner Rounds, which was bound from Buffalo to Toledo laden with coal was drowned fifteen miles south east of Rondeau.

He was in the yawl boat with a companion named Mackenzie putting a reef in the the mizzen when the eyebolt pulled out of the yawl boat and let them both into the water.  Life preservers were thrown and the schooner rounded to, but neither of the men could be seen.

Jas. Crockett was a married man, and had several children.  He was a son of Jas. Crockett of this village, and he was here for some time with his family last winter.  He was well known to all the sailors along this shore. -- Port Rowan News.
