The
death of Jane Pitman, widow of the late Robert Cridland, who
predeceased her about 29 years ago, took place on Monday night, at
the home of her son, Mr. George Cridland, 116 Kent street.
She was in her 85th year,
and was a very dear old lady. Her motherliness and sweetness of
character made her many, many friends, and the inquiries and
expressions of sympathy have been very numerous.
Mrs. Cridland was born in
England, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Francis Pitman, and came to
Canada with her parents at the age of nine years. She had reside in
the county ever since.
Sixty-four years ago she was
married to Mr. Robert Cridland. To them were born seven children,
six of whom survive. They are: Frank of Woodstock; George and Joseph
of Simcoe; Annie, now Mrs. Henry Baldwin of Dicksonville,
Ill.;
Fanny, now Mrs. Albert Baldwin of Simcoe; and Mary Jane, unmarried,
of Simcoe.
Deceased was a life-long
member of the Port Rowan Baptist church.
The funeral took place
yesterday afternoon at 1 o'clock. Service was conducted at the home
of her son on Kent street by the Rev. F. H. Wentworth. Interment
took place at Bay View Cemetery, Port Rowan, where the Rev. J. M.
Smith conducted the service at the grave-side.
Both in Simcoe and in Port
Rowan the attendance at the funeral was very large. The pall bearers
were all relatives of the deceased. They were: Arthur Pitman, Wm.
Church, Arthur Cridland, David Duckworth and Milton Baldwin.
