Mrs. Geo.
Clows, one of the oldest residents of the Township of Townsend, was
taken sick with the measles while on a visit to Tillsonburg and died
after one day's illness, at the age of 82 years.
She had been ill a day or so
before, but it was not until Sunday that any signs of danger were had,
when the aged lady took a fainting spell, expiring before any of the
neighbors could be called in.
Deceased's maiden name was
Catherine J. Love, and [she] was born in Bridgewater, Oneida Co.,
N.Y., 15 Oct 1820. Soon afterwards she went to Hartford, N.Y., where
she lived for fifteen years. Then, with her parents, she came to
Canada, and settled near Waterford, where she had remained pretty much
ever since.
She taught school for some
years in a log house on her father's farm. In 1839 she was married to
the late George Clows, settling on the homestead. Nine children were
born to them, five of whom preceded her to the spirit world.
In 1840 Mr. and Mrs. Clows
were converted at a revival service in Boston, being baptized by Elder
Spook McConnel [sic] and joined the Boston Baptist Church.
Leaving this congregation they united themselves with the Villa Nova
church, where Mrs. Clows for 30 years was a consistent member.
In 1880 they joined the
Waterford Baptist Church. In 1889 Mr. Clows died, having lived a
faithful life for his Saviour, and was laid to rest in Greenwood
cemetery.
Mrs. Clows then lived with her
son Horace F., on the farm until 1896 when they moved to Walsingham
township, and thence to Brantford in 1901, where deceased united
herself with the Calvary Baptist Church.
