At the age
of 83 years, Dr. U. J. Chambers passed away at the home of his son,
John Chambers here, on Thursday evening last.
The deceased, who was of U. E.
Loyalist parentage, was born at Marshville, Welland County, and after
living in Buffalo, Cayuga and Dunnville, finally settled in Waterford
nearly fifty years ago, and has resided here ever since, following the
occupation of jeweler and dentist for nearly 43 years.
The doctor was one of the
first graduates of the Royal College of Dental Surgeons on Ontario,
and received his diploma in the year 1870.
He first married Martha Soper
of Rainham Centre, who died fifty years ago at Dunnville. There were
two children in this family, only one of whom, John of Waterford,
survives.
Afterwards the doctor and Miss
Phoebe Ann Harris of Stoney Creek were united in wedlock, and the late
Mrs. Chambers died a year ago last October. Only one child in this
family, Mrs. Robert Lamb of Detroit, survives.
Deceased has been a member of
the Baptist church for many years. He has also been a faithful member
of the Orange order for over sixty years, and of the C.O.F. court No.
14, since 1880.
The funeral took place from
his late residence, Main street, to Greenwood cemetery, on Monday
afternoon, at 2.00 o'clock. Rev. E. R. Fitch, assisted by Rev. J. B.
Moore, conducted the services.
Many were present to pay the
last respects to one so well known and highly respected. Two of the
pall-bearers, O. McMichael and Henry Serles, represented the Baptist
church, John Schuyler and J. F. McKinnon represented the Orangemen;
and J. J. Church and N. W. Beam represented the C.O.F.
Those who attended the funeral
from a distance were:

Mrs. F. Chambers of Welland; Mrs. Geo. Wymer of Rockford, and Peter
Chambers of Scotland.
