Courtland Loses Oldest Citizen
Courtland, Jun 22: Courtland's
oldest resident, Abner Owen Buchner, was laid to rest on Sunday afternoon,
with the Rev. H. W. Watts, paster of Courtland United church, and Rev. A.
J. Lovejoy, Boston, officiating.
Deceased, who was in his 93rd
year, passed away on Thursday last after a very short illness.
The pallbearers were: Thomas
Logan, Freeman Cousins,
Richard Sherar, R. G. Herron, J. G. Bennett and William Bennett.
Interment was made in Courtland United Cemetery.
At the service in the church on
Sunday Mr. Watts took for his text a portion of the 91sr Psalm, deceased
having chosen it a short time previous to his death, and in closing read
verses written by Rev. Thomas Voaden, a former pastor of over 25 years
ago. There was a large attendance at the funeral.
Mr. Buchner leaves to mourn his
passing five daughters,
Mrs. Joseph Compeau, Akron, Ohio; Mrs. W. R. Stansell of Windsor; Mrs.
John Toms, Keewatin, Ont.; Mrs. O. L. Ronson and Benona C., both of
Courtland, and four sons, Orren C., Springfield;
William Arthur, now residing on the old homestead;
Silas, Springfield, and Dr. Elkanah M., Chicago.
There are also 29 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Born on the old Buchner homestead,
three miles from Courtland, deceased remained there until 1908, moving
then to Courtland, where he resided until his death. He was a regular
attendant of United church and Sunday school, being superintendent of the
atter [sic] for more than 25 years.
On January 14, 1932, Mr. and Mrs.
Buchner celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary in Courtland United
church, Mrs. Buchner passing away in October of the same year, at the age
of 82 years.
