J. M. Barber, an old and well known citizen of this city, died at his
home on the corner of San Josquin and Fremont streets this forenoon of
typhoid pneumonia. Mr. Barber has been seriously ill for two weeks, and
while his end was not unexpected, it was not looked for today.
The
deceased was born January 5, 1833 in Norfolk county, Canada. He married
Katherine Ward in 1854 and moved to Iowa, becoming a citizen of the
United States in 1858.
Mr.
Barber started overland for California in 1863, arriving in Stockton in
October of that year. He bought a ranch on the banks of the San Josquin
river not far from this city and for several years was known as a
prosperous and worthy farmer.
Moving
to Stockton again he was resided for twenty years in the same house in
which he died.
He
leaves a wife, Mrs. Katharine Barber; two sons, Hyland D. and Frank
Barber, and two daughters, Mrs. W. J. Haines and Lottie M. Barber.
Mr.
Barber was a member of the Masons, Odd Fellows and Ancient Order of

Deceased was a cousin of Mr. Lewis Barber of Boston.
