Major Thomas Robert Atkinson
Liberal Candidate for South Norfolk

Major Atkinson was born in Ancaster, County of Wentworth, Aug. 24th, 1854.  He was a son of Thomas and Mary Bellentine Atkinson.

Major Atkinson's career has been one worthy of emulation by every young Canadian. Born on a farm in modest circumstance, he at an early age, drifted into the City of Hamilton and apprenticed himself to a large marble establishment.

He learned the trade of stone-cutter and carving, and in the first years of manhood moved to Simcoe and went into business for himself. That was about a quarter century ago. Since then by constant application to business he has succeeded in amassing a considerable fortune.

He has taken such advantage of the educational facilities of the country that he put himself through the high school, took a two years' course at Queen's University, Kingston, and subsequently matriculated and passed to the bar. He is now at the head of the law firm of Atkinson & Petrie.

Major Atkinson has been connected with the militia since 1889, and passed through the various grades of Adjutant and Captain and is now the Senior Major.

He served some terms in the Town Council, and 1895-96 served the Town in the capacity of Mayor.

He is a prominent member of the Masonic Order, being a past D.D.G.M. of Wilson District.

He is an adherent of the Methodist Church, and was married on Feb. 4th, 1880 to Alice, daughter of Mr. M. R. Steele.
